Why do we visit news web sites or buy newspapers?
To find out what interesting things are happening. We want to find out about what affects us directly as well as being curious about things around the world that may not affect us at all.
It’s important to think about this when planning PR campaigns or writing press releases. What is our news? Will journalists and readers find it interesting? To answer this we need to find out what they do find interesting, so it’s good to read publications we are targeting.
News will often be about something:
- new
- different
- changing
- topical
- useful
- relevant
- significant
- interesting
- exciting
- entertaining
Will readers find news in your press releases?

Robert,
I certainly hope that readers find value in what I post.
Thanks for sharing this information

Thanks, David
I get too many Press releases about things that are not new or worth reporting. That is a bit like the boy that cried wolf…means good things will get missed
So do I. And when I sniff out really good stories I often have to wait until people are ready to publicise them.
Interesting read, so obvious but something I never think about! I will have some press releases to write soon so I will keep this in mind!
Thanks, Samira. Glad it helps.
Great question! I think it applies to articles, too, and whether or not readers will be interested enough to keep reading.
Thanks, Jeanine. You’re right, it does apply to articles too.
This is helpful info, I never do Press Release and certainly I will keep this in mind.
Thanks for sharing. UBC
Thanks, Shasheta. Glad it is useful.
